Cosenza is an Italian municipality of 63,761 inhabitants, capital of the province of the same name, in Calabria.
The origins of the city date back to at least the 8th century BC, when the Italic village of Kos stood on its territory, whose coins, dating back to 420 BC, are exhibited at the British Museum in London.
In the 4th century BC Consentia assumed the role of capital of the Bruzi exercising a hegemonic role in the region until its conquest by the Romans and from the 16th century it was designated the capital of Citerior Calabria. Identified as the Athens of Calabria in reference to its cultural tradition, since 1511 it has hosted the Cosentina Academy in the historic centre, one of the first academies founded in Europe.
The modern city is the fulcrum of an urban agglomeration including among others the municipality of Rende, where the campus of the University of Calabria is located.
